Day 4 - Monday 15th May - The journey to…
Ant in front of the Somerset Levels Ant on the Somerset Levels

Written by Anthony

We woke feeling a little unwilling to leave the comfort of Pyrland Farm, but after a good breakfast, we wheeled down through Taunton onto the Somerset Levels for a flat 20-mile spin with a good tailwind (not unwelcome after the last few days).

Glastonbury beckoned for lunch (with Bazil and his glorious half chickens) and we popped into the Abbey ruins to see the last resting place of King Arthur and his good lady Guinevere (or is Arthur’s grave just a 13th Century monastic publicity stunt?).

The cycling stayed flat all the way to Wells, before a hot, grinding 2.5-mile climb onto the Mendips.

Thereafter, the terrain was rolling all the way to Bristol and beyond, but the traffic was heavy, making riding a somewhat focused affair.

Staying tonight in Yate, which is something of a culture shock after the holiday destinations of the first three nights (basically a big housing estate).

So, feeling bit fed up with pub food, we wandered into Chipping Sodbury for big plates of pasta and pizza.

Still no rain. How long can the good fortune last?
