Day 6 - Wednesday 17th May - The journey to…

Written by Steve

After a brilliant night's sleep, assisted by earplugs to drown out Ant's snoring (which duly allowed me to return the favour), we decided on a new cycling strategy.

Based on poor weather predictions by the man at the B&B, combined with the longest day's riding so far, we decided to forsake a lunch break and replace it with our own bespoke sports diet: a combination of energy drink (scientifically designed to satisfy the needs of the modern athelete during extreme excercise) and Mars bars (designed to satisfy the needs of the modern couch potato whilst watching an Eastenders omnibus).

Five litres of energy drink, four Mars bars and 50 miles later, we were totally knackered, but at this point, and most importantly, dry, with 20 miles remaining. With only sections of the A41 to go and some other minor roads, we thought we had it cracked!

One more mile gone and the rain started, then the lorries came, and we were still knackered. Lessons learnt: The A41 is not a pleasant place for the touring cyclist, and our sports diet needs some refinement.

The final 19 miles were a tough grind, not only physically but mentally, but a pleasant surprise was to be found at the end, yet another excellent Farm Stay UK B&B in Audlem, Cheshire.
